Orlando gets typecast as a theme-park-only destination, and I get it — that’s what draws most people there in the first place. But if you’re headed that way and want to build in a day (or two) away from the parks, the city has a lot more going on than roller coasters and character meet-and-greets. Here’s where I’d point you.
Slow down at Lake Eola Park
Right in the middle of downtown, Lake Eola Park is the easiest reset button after a few days of park-hopping. Think a big lake dotted with swans, a Chinese pagoda, a large fountain, and walking trails around the perimeter. Rent one of the swan-shaped paddle boats if you want a genuinely fun, low-key hour on the water, or just grab coffee and walk the loop.
ICON Park and International Drive
ICON Park sits on International Drive and is basically a one-stop entertainment complex if you want theme-park energy without an actual theme park ticket. The 400-foot observation wheel gives you panoramic views of the city, and it’s paired with Madame Tussauds, a SEA LIFE Aquarium, and a museum of illusions — easy to knock out in an afternoon or evening.
Museums worth the detour
The Orange County Regional History Center is a five-story museum dedicated to Central Florida’s history — a good option if you want context on the region beyond the parks. If you’ve got curious kids (or you’re just a little morbid like me), the Museum of Osteology is a genuinely fascinating stop, with hundreds of real skeletons from humans and animals around the world.
A different kind of wildlife encounter
If you want animal encounters without the theme park crowds, look into one of the hands-on safari tours just outside the city, where you can get up close with giraffes, camels, and other exotic animals. It’s a nice middle ground between a zoo and a full safari, and a good option for families or animal lovers who want something more personal.
The most unexpected stop: a beer spa
Yes, this is real, and yes, it’s exactly as it sounds. Orlando has its own beer spa where you soak in a proprietary beer blend, drink beer and wine while you soak, relax in an in-room sauna, and cool off on a straw bed afterward. If you want a story to tell more than a typical spa day, this is it.
Planning tips
- Build in at least one non-park day if your trip is longer than three days — it breaks up the pace and saves your feet.
- Lake Eola Park and downtown are a quick rideshare from most of the resort areas.
- Book the beer spa and safari tours ahead of time — both have limited daily slots.
If Orlando’s on your list this year, don’t let the parks be the whole story. Have you found a favorite non-park spot in Orlando? Drop it in the comments — I’m always collecting recommendations.
